Position Summary

The Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner assesses the need for, develops, and delivers physical rehabilitation programs to facilitate the animal’s needs. The Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner implements individualized therapy programs designed to restore, reinforce, and enhance performance. In addition, the Canine Rehabilitation Practitioner instructs, educates, and trains patients and caregivers in those skills and functions essential for promoting independence and productivity, in order to diminish or correct pathology. They direct activities to promote and maintain health.

Key Responsibilities

Patient Care & Service Delivery

  • Deliver effective and efficient rehabilitation services with adherence to established plans of care, department schedules, and timely documentation
  • Adapt programs and plans of care according to the needs of individual patients
  • Puts patient needs first and ensures patients and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere that recognizes individual needs and rights

Patient Assessment & Treatment Planning

  • Screen, examine, and evaluate patients, including history, systems review, and application of appropriate tests and measures
  • Synthesize information and interpret examination findings to establish a diagnosis and identify impairments
  • Determine the predicted level of improvement and time required to achieve it
  • Identify precautions and contraindications
  • Develop appropriate treatment goals and methods in collaboration with patients and caregivers
  • Implement physical therapy treatment plans and complete all related documentation and record keeping

Therapeutic Techniques & Modalities

  • Therapeutic Exercise: Aerobic capacity conditioning, balance coordination, agility training, body mechanics and postural stabilization, flexibility exercises, gait and locomotion training, neuro-motor development training, relaxation, strength, power, and endurance training
  • Functional Training: Skills and techniques for participation in mobility activities
  • Manual Therapy: Hands-on therapeutic techniques
  • Modalities: Use of electrotherapeutic, physical agent, and mechanical modalities
  • Adaptive Devices: Design, fabricate, fit, and/or apply adaptive devices, including orthotics and prosthetics; train patients in their use

Ongoing Assessment & Safety

  • Perform routine reexamination as needed to modify or progress treatment plans
  • Evaluate patient progress, attitudes, and behavior as related to rehabilitative potential
  • Promote a safe environment and enforce the elimination of fire and safety hazards
  • Perform other related duties as required
